Dress That Mama

Every woman should own the perfect little black dress. It should be flattering for her body shape and versatile enough to wear anywhere; dress it down with black fleece thigh highs and flat black boots, dress it up with fancy heels and a nice necklace for a night out.

This is my favorite little black dress. I wore it out to get a drink with girlfriends on Friday night and got a few random compliments! The back is so pretty too — a racerback that looks sleek and modern. DSC_0013Looking for your own little black dress?

Here is one with long sleeves.

A pretty lacy number if your style is more feminine. Or this one if you are feminine and very brave!

The mesh details on the side and neck of this shift dress are so interesting and really dress it up.

If you had a random five hundred dollars lying around, this mini dress is so timeless and flattering. Pricey though.

A flared skirt compliments a smaller waist in this one.

This long black shirtdress by Rodebjer can be worn many ways — it has buttoned openings on the sides and back and can be wrapped and re-buttoned.

And here is the dress I’m wearing above.

  1. Hi Lauren! I bought this dress recently and it reminded me of your style so when I saw this post today I figured I’d share. Here is a link to it – https://www.etsy.com/listing/195021324/linen-dress-gathered-waist-buttoned-up?ref=shop_home_active_1. She hand makes every item so it takes about a month but it was well worth it to me. This dress is really the only one thats my style, I got the black had her lengthen it to make it more of a midi versus knee length. Its definitely something you would see in a boutique for a lot more. I was surprised at how chic and lovely it looked in person. Just thought I’d pass it along. 🙂

  2. You make black look great! I’ve been wearing black and gray lexclusiveky all winter… and I am really ready to break out some of my more colorful summer options (like white? bold! 😉

  3. Hahhahahaha! You know why I’m laughing at this. But you, as always, look fab. No but seriously that dress is the perfect shape for you. That is something I’d like to learn, dressing for my shape. I haven’t the faintest. <3

  4. I know, Milla! I read your post about feminism and dressing how you want, and caught the part about “dressing for your shape” and literally rolled my eyes at myself! Good grief. I don’t even know…

  5. DUDE! Read my response over at my blog. See this is what happens with the internets. I’m laughing because OF COURSE I don’t have a little black dress, because I have everything in every color and print, but I wish I did, because it’s a total power item. And also I genuinely meant that I would like to learn more about dressing better for my shape, because I wear a lot of “maternity” cut stuff, simply because I feel like it’s the most comfortable. Imho dressing one’s colors or shape is only negative in terms of trying to appear one way or another (thinner, taller, more demure), not if it makes us feel more comfortable in our own second skin. I’m sorry if it came off any other way. And for the RECORD, I really really do enjoy these style posts of yours, they’re not shallow, they’re super genuine. You’re a busy mom of three with still time for your individual self-expression in clothes and I look up to that a lot. Unlike a lot of mummy style bloggers, you post genuine (not super-posed, unphotoshopped) images of your daily wears, something that is sorely lacking in that realm. I love it. Keep ’em coming. So many loves, so little finger-wagging. Also, am thinking about what my little black dress would look like…
