  1. Great article! Thanks so much! I’m intrigued by the recent interest in how to best engage young boys at school, given that sitting at a desk all day is not so great for them. Have you come across any innovative approaches to this in your reading?

  2. Yes, Tricia, I have! But it’s all very untraditional ways, generally more self-directed approaches. I’m learning a lot from the book “Free to Learn” by Peter Gray. It’s unconventional and I think very inspiring. Have a great weekend!

  3. I think we should promote less sedentary work for everyone – boys, girls, men, and women. It would be amazing to see this pushed in elementary schools and in traditional office spaces. There are very simple ways to do it, such as having people use high-top standing tables rather than sitting desks. It’s not that people need to stand all day long at school or work, but oscillating between standing and sitting throughout the course of the day could be impactful.

  4. I had to share this with you! So, I was browsing my Facebook feed a few minutes ago (usually it lasts 45 sec. until I’m bored) and was just about to shut it down when I thought I saw a picture of Milo flying over his bed… I clicked it back on and HAD to see what this article was about. (that could totally be him!) Low and behold I wasn’t cracking up! Thank goodness, I haven’t had my full cup of coffee yet.
I was immediately so proud of you! I just thought it was so cool. A random guy in NH, that I happen to work with, posting something my cousin wrote in St. Louis via the mighty Washington Post. Yes, he has three boys as well. Keep up the amazing work Lauren, and give my love to the family!

  5. Great article.

My girls hate “sit-down” talks as well. I get much further in any sort of discussion with them while walking, running or even driving in the car. If we had a basketball hoop it might be even more successful – hmmm, maybe we need one of those!

  6. Loved it! W’s preschool teacher always tells me that she does see a big difference in the way that boys and girls learn, and that boys need to be in motion much more often. It’s so funny because I feel like W is really good at sitting and working on a project or even listening to a book on tape, but when he is around his classmates he’s much more active. I imagine your house kind of like that classroom all day long 😉
