Most of what is still thriving in our garden is the big leafy green stuff: the swiss chard and different varieties of kale. But what has surprised me is our abundance of strawberries! Despite the temperatures dipping into the 30’s at night, those berries keep coming. It is our first season growing strawberries, so we had no idea what to expect. One of Emil’s favorite parts of the day is when we trek in through the gate and squat down to look under the leaves of the strawberry plants for ruby red treats. We are, of course, letting the strawberries spread across the ground as far as they like, hoping that they will return and thrive again next spring.
As for the weeds, I stopped pulling them long ago, but they aren’t bothering anything, so I ignore them and they seem to keep to themselves…
We still have a row of beets and a small butternut squash growing on its vine, and plenty of herbs. Who knows how much longer we will be reaping the bounty from this garden, but I’ll take whatever it gives!
After the weather cools off enough, we will put on some sort of cover, probably just a nice thick layer of leaves. For all of you winter gardeners, do you ever plant cover crops? If so, I’d love to hear about your luck with it!
Love it!

We’ve completely neglected our garden and somehow it’s still kicking. I just pulled a dozen giant turnips that I thought were just greens (things that happen when James has no idea what he planted!).
Your’s is looking great, and very weed free.
