The Apple

DSC_0015

Last summer, we were up to our necks in apples. We picked them weekly, sometimes daily. We baked them into pies and applesauce, ate them fresh off the tree, shared them with neighbors walking by. We reveled in our ability to grow stuff.

Then, this summer, nada. Well, not quite.

Because it is custom for some apple trees to only produce every other year, we were ready for their absence. But we have really, really missed our apples! And as if our tree could read our thoughts, it teased us. With one apple. One perfect apple, hanging just out of reach. One apple that calls to me through my kitchen window as I wash dishes.

DSC_0017I’m going to pick it later today and enjoy the hell out of it.
