School

The day started much like any other… you know, the typical wake-up call at 5:30am (alright, a little earlier than usual, but let me tell the story already) “Mommmmmeeeeeee! Ilikesomeapplejuuuuus!” Just as my mini-cherub falls blissfully asleep, dreaming of his precious milkie, his brother awakens with a roar. Big day. First day of school. Or should I say “school.” AKA mommy’s 3-hour break (ha, ha, funny I should DARE think that I would have a break with a screamer like Oliver).

Nope. Didn’t bother to get him all dressed up. It was tempting, but after thinking about the teacher taking him to the bathroom several times (oops, that didn’t happen either. surprise.) we opted for comfort and speed in clothing removal. Besides, isn’t the title of this blog Crumbbums?

So I am probably more traumatized by Milo going off to school than he was. All reports were good from school, but I’m still not convinced after bringing him home that he is completely ready. Little bum saved all his anxiety or whatever it was for me when he got back home. Literally kicking and screaming about everything before we even walked in the door. Didn’t want to go inside. Didn’t want peanut butter and jelly. “I don’t yike bananas. I don’t yike sandwich. I don’t want to sit down. I don’t want to stand up.” Except all of this was screamed through rivers of tears. He was completely hysterical. Then refused to nap. Eeeee. After all of the screaming and gnashing of teeth, it all came down to rocking my naked two-year-old in his old rocking chair for half an hour until he calmed down. And said between gulps of air, “Mommy leaved.”

(insert sound of heart breaking here)

Is it unrealistic to tell him I’ll never, ever leave him again? I know. I didn’t say that. But I wanted to so badly.Who knew motherhood would be so painful and so wonderful all at the same time?

And the tantrums, oh the tantrums! Who has this little child become? So irrational, so emotional, so… TWO. I’ll admit, as other people described their toddlers going through rough patches once they turned two, I secretly scoffed. Not my Milo. He is the sweetest, most delicious and most delightful young slice of boy that ever was. Plus, he’s smarter than Bill Gates. Blah, blah, blah, my kid is amazing, blah, blah.

See? He even reads to his little brother

… who is also a genius, did I mention?

I guess all of these rambling thoughts come down to two things. My wonderful, sweet, smart (no, really. he is smart) Milo is growing up. And he is nowhere near grown up.

  1. I cannot begin to imagine how rough that day was for you…sobbing “mommy leaved” in the rocking chair?! Makes me want to cry, too! It IS good for both of you, and Oliver/Timmy, too. Just take it in small doses to start. An FYI, Llama Llama has a new book, “Llama Llama Misses Mama”. All about the 1st day of school. Might help. 🙂

  2. Great suggestion… I remember seeing that book but totally forgetting about it. And Milo’s only enrolled for two days a week, so I’m going to give it a few more times before throwing in the towel just yet.

  3. My heart broke at the inserted sound of your heart breaking. I can’t imagine how it feels when they realize that you have left….or at least they verbalize it! My heart breaks twice a week when I drop him off at our AWESOME babysitter’s house (which he loves). He is all smiles and I am all tears. Hopefully it will get better for you two and you know since he is so smart…he might be playing you just a little. I bet he secretly loves it there…..at least you can tell yourself that to get yourself through those 2 hours which really should be a much needed break for Mommy! Good luck, I am thinking of you!

  4. I love “Mother’s Day Out/PreSchool Programs.” And don’t worry, it does get better, eventually. Elizabeth still cries almost every morning that I drop her off at school. She stops within a minute, but it still breaks my heart. She loves school, so I am not sure why there is so much drama.

  5. Okay, all things aside, I have to say that those pictures are so great! That is the sweetest looking school – it is straight out of a post card! (Tell Milo that; I’m sure it will help!)

    Love,
    Kelly
