After what seemed like setback after setback, we finally finished expanding our vegetable garden! Andrew did a great job on the fence, especially considering our downward sloping yard. But perfection is not necessary, as long as the goal is achieved: a fence to keep out the critters (human and rodent and canine) and to prevent the inevitable trampling of small plants if a fence were not there.ย ย
And though I would love to have started everything from seeds this year, it just wasn’t do-able. If things go well, we will try for it next year.
Here’s what we planted:
Broccoli, broccoli raab, 3 different varieties of tomatoes, 2 varieties of kale, rainbow chard, rhubarb, beets, purple and orange carrots, garlic, beans, butternut and straight-neck squash, red bell peppers, rosemary, oregano, dill, basil, parsley, thyme, red cabbage, and cucumbers, as well as edible flowers throughout. Who knows if our seeds will all come up, but I certainly hope so! What a bounty we will have if they do!ย
Milo and Oliver helped my finish the path leading up to the gate yesterday afternoon and had a lot of fun pouring the sand for the stones. It feels incredible to be finished with the hard part. Now… we wait (and weed and water and sing to)!
What a beautiful garden! It is going to be one of those right out of a storybook! I’m certain Peter Rabbit is nearby. Honestly, I love the touches of color and fantasy. Great job to all!
Thanks, Mom! I think it’s going to look really amazing once the plants have grown up a bit and we add some more “whimsy.” ๐
I love it! The fence looks so great. It’s such a smart idea, and something I hope we eventually get around to doing for our garden, too. And the stepping stones leading up to the entry are such a pretty addition.
Won’t the cats and squirrels just climb up and over that fence? Are you putting a net over it?
it looks awesome! and purple carrots!!
We only had a garden for a couple years when I was little, but it made the biggest impression on me. It felt like Christmas on the days my mom let us pick a couple fresh strawberries to put on top of our cereal. Such a gift to your little guys!
Hope you had a happy mama’s day, by the way!
Aw, thank you, Elisa! I’m hoping that it has the same effect on my boys… they are already nibbling the leaves off the basil, mint, and parsley!
Yay! I can’t wait to see the garden in full bloom. And I’m a little jealous. All I can do right now is container gardening since we rent our our backyard is teeny tiny.
I know I say this a lot, but you and yours are such an inspiring bunch. I’m off to weed my butt off. thanks for that. Looks so beautiful, can’t wait to see the fruits of your labour come.
The fence came out great, what a wonderful garden you’ll have this year- can’t wait to see everything come up.
Dood! This is amazing! How exciting. I need to be extra nice to you Knights to share in that bounty.
Maggie, you couldn’t be any nicer if you tried! We would love to share! ๐
The garden looks fantastic. I love the spoon plant markers. Am sure you’ll be eating yummy garden goods all summer long x
I love it and can’t wait to see what comes from your plot of earth! We are working on our own garden still, but some more of our plants should get into the ground this weekend. ๐ I want to make one of those bean teepees for Isadora next year, they look great!
