Dress That Mama: Purple Hair

DSC_0012

So… I had my hair colored last weekend and you know what happened? I ended up with purple hair! Funny, right? Hm. Not so funny? You know, these things happen from time to time. This time, instead of hemming and hawing about it, I’m going with it. It’s a little punk rock, which is different for me. So I’m embracing the funkiness and wearing bright red lipstick every day, imagining what tattoos I’ll get on the inside of each wrist, and vowing to rock the bright pink socks with purple polka dots that I just scored…

Have you ever had a hair catastrophe? How did you recover/deal? What’s your vote: rock it, or change it?

  1. Well first off it doesn’t look purple… maybe dark auburn? You are rocking the punk edge beautifully.

I’ve had more hair carastrophe’s than I can count. My teenage years I bleached it all out then colored it crazy hues each week with manic panic before finally begging my mom to take me to a salon and get it turned back to normal. Of course normal was kind of purple because it was covering fire engine red πŸ™‚

Now I’m on the other end, totally petrified of changing things up to my detriment. It’s a loaded issue that hair.

I like your’s. Fun for the gray winter!

  2. I think it looks really stunning on you! It isn’t so extreme that you look like you shop at Hot Topic or anything. It’s subtle and rocker-ish all at once. And totally get wrist tattoos. Get some kind of animal so when we meet in person one day, my bird tattoo can battle your tattoo animal. πŸ™‚

I had a hair catastrophe right before I turned 30. I had very long hair, what I would call “mermaid hair” and went to get subtle flowy layers cut into it. Except the stylist gave me a terrible 80s shag mullet. The shortest layer was so short and blunt that I had to cut it all off into a pixie cut, which I ended up loving. Even though now I am trying to grow mermaid hair again, and it’s taking motherfreaking FOREVER.

  3. I think it looks striking against your pale skin. Very pretty!

Oh man. I’ve had a ton of hair catastrophes but mostly haircuts as I’ve never dyed my hair… although the day is soon approaching as the grays are sprouting up more often now!

    Love those boots!

  4. I love it! Keep it!

And which hair coloring catastrophe would you like to hear about? My loreal touch of sun incident or the so black it’s blue hair that made me look like an anime character? Ha, I’m with Lilly and totally upright about doing anything to my hair now.

  5. It’s a nice change for winter, but I am partial to you regular hair color which I think looks great on you.

Worst hair disaster was when I volunteered to be a hair model for a Paul Mitchell hair show (yes, I’m calling them out — I’m still bitter about the incident). I was approached in the mall by a rep to see if I might be interested in participating. Seeing as I needed a cut for an upcoming wedding, I thought this would be a great opportunity to get a fabulous cut for free. I told her I’d be willing to cut two inches and have my hair colored as long as it was something that would be appropriate for my rather conservative office. Not a problem, she told me.

The morning of the show, they colored my hair and left it wet for the on stage cut. I already had a bad feeling about the color since it glowed pinkish-red. If I had been smarter, I would have bolted then. Finally, I was called on stage and right before everyone’s eyes, I was given a hasty pixy cut. I started to tear up and by the time I was back stage, I was bawling. Sorry, there was nothing they could do about it. I received a Paul Mitchell hair care package and was sent packing.

To add salt to the wound, I had to go to my regular salon to correct the color as well as the hair cut which, because of the nature of the show, had been done quickly without any attention to detail. It was an expensive lesson that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

  6. It certainly doesn’t look PURPLE purple…just a hint! I like it! I’ve had MANY a hair disaster…usually b/c I get impulsive and cut/dye it myself when the mood strikes! (P.S. I owe you a phone call!)

  7. Dude, as usual you’ve made a potential catastrophe turn into a totally hip and only slightly indie look. Way to roll with it. I predict at least 7 of your bloggodites copying this on some level. It does look amazingly Snow-Whiteish with your skin and lipstick. Now just tattoo the names of your dwarfs down your spine.

  8. Well, all I can say is that I think your hair looks great!
Back in 1969, I had very long hair which I colored medium auburn. (My eyebrows, too…) Now, remember that my hair is very fine, and the color helped give it some ‘body’. Someone told me to just get a gentle perm to give it MORE body… It did. The woman gave me a perm I’ll never forget. It was left on my hair WAY TOO LONG, and upon drying it out, I could hardly gather it into a ponytail. At that time I worked in a VERY conservative place – no one said a word about my freaked out electric orange hair. You should have seen the brown roots while I grew it out enough to have a snippy professional hair ‘designer’ ask me, “Eww – what happened to your hair?” and I replyed, “Nothing…” It was a great time to be a ‘hippy’ in Baltimore…!!!!

  9. I’m with everyone else – it looks great! And not purple at all – more like a dark plum auburn. You should definitely rock it!

And yes, I’ve had too many hair catastrophes to count! The most recent being earlier this year when I wanted to see what my hair would look like brown. Well, I found out! It was BAD.

  10. I agree with everyone else — I like it and don’t think it looks purple! It looks great on you. I went darker with my hair a few months ago and really like it. I’ve had a few hair problems, but no major catastrophes. The great thing about hair is it always grows back or can be dyed again. πŸ™‚ Rock it, Lauren!

  11. I really like it, but don’t think it looks too purple. Maybe a bit maroon, but in a good way. I’ve never dyed my hair so no catastrophes there, but I have had some pretty bad short haircuts in my day and have shaved my hair all off on purpose. I actually liked the shaved hair most of the time, but the bad short haircuts were often too terrible to want to recount.

  12. Your hair is totally adorable! Keep it. It goes well with the red lipstick and your sweet and simple wardrobe. For a hair-disaster, it’s really cute.

I’ve had so. many. hair. calamities. And most of them totally self-inflicted. Bowl-cut, instead of pixie, crooked bangs, crooked cuts, horrible bleaching incident, which left me with yellow hair… Not cute.

  13. oh gosh, i feel like every haircut i have i hate it immediately afterwards and spend a lot of time hating the hairstylist. but it’s never, ever as bad as i imagine it to be! it always becomes a lesson in acceptance.

plus, your hair looks great! no worries!
