A few years ago, I made Milo and Oliver hand-sewn stuffed animals out of an old, incredibly soft, pair of jeans. And you know what? They are still the boys’ favorite lovies. It warms my heart when they say things like, “Mama, you know what my favorite stuffed animal is? Pocket Bear. Because you made him for me!” Milo says the same thing about “Funny Bunny.” It is true that handmade things are more cherished when we understand the work (and love) that goes into making them.
Much to my surprise (and delight) recently, Oliver and Milo both asked to make their own hand-sewn stuffed animals. They accompanied me to the fabric store, where we bought some soft denim fabric, and some extra thread and needles (as I was running low on supplies), as well as a small bag of polyfill for the stuffing and buttons for the eyes. Milo chose to make a wolf. Oliver chose to make an elephant.
I helped them cut out the shapes of their creatures, and showed them how to make simple stitches, and they did the rest!
They have been buys sewing every chance they get (and calling for occasional help from the other room while I prepare dinner) and are so proud of their work. I can’t wait to see how these little buddies turn out (and I’ll be sure to post photos when they are complete)!
Check out a great post on Montessori sewing ideas here. And have a wonderful Thursday!
Love it. So great that the boys are learning to sew and are willing to try things out on their own.
Just took my sewing machine out and it feels so good to be making and mending!
