Potty Training Perils

Be warned. This post is about poop.

And no, that is not poop on Oliver’s face. Thank God. An Oreo, folks. Or what used to be one, anyway. We have been bribing, encouraging, ignoring, yelling (okay, I’m only human!), you name it. Trying not to make a big deal about it, but Oliver has officially regressed in the potty-training arena.

Go on the potty? Sure! And then the next time you ask me I will just pee my pants!

Going from pretty much fully potty-trained a couple of months ago to now… when he is as indifferent as one can get is, above all, frustrating. We have tried rewards, but Oliver just doesn’t seem to care anymore. Maybe the novelty has worn off, maybe he is regressing because we brought home a new baby brother. Whatever it is, AHHHHHHHH!!!! I thought we were all but done with diapers.

So, your thoughts and suggestions are welcome. Should we just put him back in a diaper and forget about it for the time being? Should we keep trying until he gets it (again)? Have any of you parents experienced regression with the potty? This is new to us. Once Milo was potty trained, there was no looking back, no regression. Your suggestions are appreciated!

  1. We have regression right now, too. DHH was nearly full time trained at 18 months after lots of practice. Now he’s 25numonths and full of opinions. One opinion is ‘pook in the diiiiiiiper”. I am going to do what is easier for me now – not use undies – but still try toilet as much as possible. We have a boone potty seat you put on the potty, and that’s a bit encouraging for him.

  2. CJ regressed when we moved to NC. He went from potty trained to about 1 accident per day. It was frustrating. We went back to telling him when to go, rewarding him for no accidents, and here’s the bad one…purposely giving treats to his sisters that he didn’t get because he had an accident. I feel your pain. He’s gotten a little better since, but we are still doing diapers at night.

  3. I’ve heard of this happening as well. Avery isn’t completely potty trained, so I don’t have much advice. But my friend’s daughter regressed, and they pushed her to use the potty and she fought to the point that she would hold it all day until her belly was distended! They went back to diapers for a long time and now I think she’s almost there. So I guess my advice is to not push him too much. Good luck!

  4. Wow, I was very afraid that was not oreo around his mouth… I don’t have any personal experience, but my first thought was that he’s trying to keep his baby status a little longer. I wonder if Milo can help encourage Oliver to be a big boy like him?

  5. Oliver is saying under his breath, “I’ll show HER who’s boss of my poop… She’d better not bring home ANOTHER one….”

  6. Oh, Rick. Don’t worry. In just a few short weeks you will have more poop in your house than you ever could have dreamed of. Hope you’re stocked up on diapers, dude. But seriously, we are so excited for you two. And all the poop.
